Frequently Asked Questions about the Restore Program

Q: Why use the Restore® program at Restore Health for hormone therapy?

A: For more than three decades, Restore has been providing the very type of individualized, low-dose hormone therapy and monitoring of outcomes that is now recommended by the FDA. Through hormone and bone loss testing and individualized prescriptions that use only hormones like the ones your body produces, Restore helps assure prescriptions supplement hormones in exactly the amount needed to avoid the side effects associated with over- or under-dosing.  The Restore program provides heavily discounted follow-up hormone and bone loss testing to monitor outcomes to patients who consistently prescribe with Restore Health Pharmacy.

Q: What is the difference between saliva testing and serum (blood) testing?

A: Saliva tests measure "free" hormones (2-5% of the hormones in a person’s body), which are the hormones that are bioavailable to stimulate receptor cells and carry out the tasks they are designed to perform. In contrast, serum testing generally measures the "total" hormones, which includes those hormones already bound to protein and unavailable for the cells to use.  More information about saliva testing is viewable here.

Q: How do patients get their hormone levels tested through saliva?

A: The patient’s Healthcare Provider initiates the process by completing and signing the Restore Diagnostics Laboratory Order Form and faxing or emailing it to us. A discrete and easy-to-use test kit is sent to the patient with complete instructions for collecting saliva samples in the privacy of their home and samples returned to our lab for analysis. Results are provided to the Healthcare Provider.

Q: If I am a Woman, what levels should I test for?

A: Estradiol and Progesterone testing is recommended for all women.  Estradiol and Progesterone are the primary female hormones.  If they are not in balance women may have symptoms of hot flashes/night sweats, water retention, breast tenderness, mood swings and other mood-related symptoms, loss of bone mineral density, among other issues.  Testosterone testing is recommended if you have symptoms of lack of libido (sex drive), anxiety, muscle weakness, fatigue, lack of energy or depression.  Also consider testing your Testosterone level if you are concerned about or have loss of bone mineral density.  DHEA and Cortisol testing is recommended if you are concerned about how your body is handling stress as these two hormones are important in how you manage both physical and mental stress.  NTx testing is recommended if you are concerned about loss of bone mineral density.  NTx testing  tells you whether your current rate of bone turnover is normal, elevated or high and is a valuable tool in measuring  the effectiveness of hormone therapy and self-care measures in preserving bone health.

Q: If I am a Man, what levels should I test for?

A: Testosterone, DHT and Estradiol testing is recommended for all men.  Testosterone is the primary male hormone; however, men also produce and utilize small amounts of estrogens such as Estradiol. The balance between Testosterone and Estradiol effects how men feel and function. DHT is derived from Testosterone and affects the prostate gland.  DHEA and Cortisol testing is recommended if you are concerned about how your body is handling stress as these two hormones are important in how you manage both physical and mental stress.  NTx testing is recommended if you are concerned about loss of bone mineral density.  Men, as well as women, can develop osteoporosis. NTx testing tells you whether your current rate of bone turnover is normal, elevated or high and is a valuable tool in measuring  the effectiveness of hormone therapy and self-care measures in preserving bone health.

Q: Why does Restore recommend NTx urine testing to determine rate of bone loss?

A: Osteoporosis is an important concern for both men and women. Our Bone Health Profile test is able to quickly measure current rate of bone loss, showing changes within three to four months instead of the two years generally required for sequential bone densitometry (BMD) measurements. This is a distinct advantage that allows early intervention through adjustment of hormone therapy and self-care measures to help prevent bone loss. Our Bone Health Profile test accurately measures the NTx molecule (cross-linked N-telopeptides), a sensitive biochemical marker of bone metabolism.

Q: Does an MD have to enroll a patient in the Restore program?

A: No. Any Healthcare Provider can order Restore lab testing.

Q: How soon will results be ready?

A: Results take approximately 3-4 weeks, once our laboratory receives the patient's samples. Results will be faxed directly to the Healthcare Provider or can be accessed by your Provider at RestoreDirect.com.

Q: What information will the Healthcare Provider receive after the patient has tested?

A: The Healthcare Provider will receive the lab results and, if Restore Clinical Services was elected, a detailed letter evaluating the patients results, symptoms, medical history, and specific prescription recommendations for hormone therapy compounded at Restore Health Pharmacy.

Q: What does a Healthcare Provider do once results have been reviewed with the patient and appropriate prescription therapy has been determined?

A: The Healthcare Provider can fax us at 888-898-7412 with the patient’s prescription(s), call our pharmacists at 800-558-7046 or enter the prescription(s) online at RestoreDirect.com. Our customer service representatives will follow-up by contacting the patient for shipping, billing and prescription insurance information.

Q: Do you have anything in writing that clinically supports the use of saliva testing?

A: Yes. A saliva bibliography is available to Healthcare Providers upon request.

Q: Will insurance cover the patient’s tests?

A: More and more insurance companies are covering saliva testing. Payment is first obtained from the patient prior to lab testing services.  Information can be made available to a patient about how to submit a claim to their insurance company.

Q: How does this program benefit the Healthcare Provider and the patient in the long run?

A: When therapy outcomes are monitored on an ongoing basis using Restore’s testing, hormone therapy can be individualized for optimal symptom management and protection of bone mineral density.

Q: What if a patient is already using hormone therapy?

A: Restore's testing protocol allows for accurate assessment of hormone levels of patients who are already using hormone therapy.  Such testing is beneficial for adjusting hormone therapy to avoid over or under-dosing and enhance symptom management and/or protection of bone mineral density.
