What are Bioidentical Hormones?
Bioidentical hormones, sometimes referred to as natural hormones, are hormones with the exact same molecular make-up as the sex hormones produced by the ovaries or testes. Bioidentical hormones are an effective class of medications that are approved by the FDA and have been available for decades in the USA and Europe.
Because they are identical to the hormones naturally found in the body, bioidentical hormones fit perfectly with the body’s hormone receptors, producing identical physiologic responses.
Bioidentical Progesterone vs. Synthetic Progestins
Bioidentical micronized progesterone, a commonly used bioidentical hormone, is produced from natural plant sterols found in soy and yam oils and is commonly used as a bioidentical alternative to the synthetic progestin medroxyprogesterone, commonly prescribed as Provera®.
Compounded bioidentical progesterone is often prescribed as part of a complete hormone replacement therapy regime.
Symptoms of progesterone deficiency may include:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Irritability
- Mood swings
- Insomnia
- Fatigue
- Water retention
- Hot flashes/night sweats
- Breast tenderness
- Pain and inflammation of joints
- Infertility
